Closed loop economy

On 30th May 2024, the Council of the European Union adopted a directive promoting the repair of broken or defective goods, the so-called Right to Repair Directive (R2RD), which will make it easier for consumers to seek repair of goods instead of replacement, and make repair services cheaper, simpler, faster and transparent.

The new regulations are intended to help reduce the number of electro-waste items and encourage manufacturers to design equipment to be more durable and repairable, and then – in line with the principle of a closed-loop economy – reusable and recyclable.
The directive enters into force on the twentieth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the EU, which took place on 10th July 2024. From then on, the Member States will have 24 months to implement it into national law.
