On 10th April 2025, President of the US signed an executive order branded as “Make America Shipbuilding Great Again”. Its officially declared, by the Trump Administration, aim is to revive the US shipbuilding and shipping industry and loosen the dependency on China in particular.
The order authorizes the US Trade Representative to introduce, even by 17th April 2025, US penalty port docking fees on any: (i) Chinese built ship – up to USD 1.5 million, (ii) ship operated by a Chinese operator – up to USD 1 million, (iii) ship operated by an operator with ships on order in Chinese shipyards (with more than 50%) – up to USD 1 million.
Further, additional tariffs will be levied by the US Trade Representatives on STS cranes produced in China and other cargo handling equipment manufactured outside the US.
